There is a huge variaty of plasters on the market and even bigger variety of  application techniques.  Several things need to be taken into consideration before determining which finish to use.  Such as budget (synthetic products are cheaper than natural, 2-3 layer finishes are cheaper than 5-7 layer ones, adding stencils can raise the price...), area where the finish will be installed ( high traffic areas call for more durable finishes with easier repair process), lighting in the area will help to pick the perfect color, style of the house and furnishing will help to determine the finish as well,  etc...
